Review/Synopsis
————————————————- – —————————————–
Meticulously crafted but also thoughtful and predictable, James Cameron’s 1989 epic encounter in the deep sea confirms one of the oldest first principles of cinema: everything moves more slowly underwater. Ed Harris and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, as married ex-petroleum engineers who still have some “issues” to work out, are recruited to help an enthusiastic Navy SEAL (Michael Biehn) with a secret rescue operation: a nuclear submarine has been ambushed and sunk. , under mysterious circumstances, in some of the deepest waters on Earth, and petrotechnics has the only submersible capable of diving that far. Every image and every performance is incredibly sharp and detailed (and the computerized aquatic creatures are mesmerizing), but the film’s meandering pace is lethal. It’s the audience that ends up feeling hollow. For a guy who loves guns as much as Cameron (his next film, after all, was the masterpiece Terminator 2: JudgmentDay), it’s interesting that the moral balance here is heavily in favor of the competent engineer; military types are amoralistic rather than the ends justifying the means, just like the government bureaucrats in Aliens.

This is the only true widescreen anamorphic version of The Abyss released, literally every other region version has been cropped with black bars and since this is a very low resolution, just like the other region versions have cut sections of the film that add another 28 minutes to the movie.
This recoded version has no cuts and, for the first time, is truly widescreen.
This was personally encoded by me, the Carjacker of the =Uncut Special Edition= DVD.
